What if you were ejaculating three times a day... or even once a day. What about three times a week? What does that mean for your health?

When we look at porn addiction, there are so many elements of health that get affected. And although many in my field are focusing on the “porn isn’t realistic” and “porn isn’t good for your relationship” side of things, I come from a different angle of science and the body. A man isn’t going to give up porn if he perceives it to be beneficial for him, and if the only carrot that you can dangle is that it’s not healthy for his relationship, he’ll come back with a justification that “I’m not that kind of guy, I love my partner”. You can then tell him it objectifies women and the kind of porn that’s out there these days is violent and degrading to women, he’ll argue again that he’s a good guy and that he doesn’t watch violent porn. See how this type of angle isn’t ENOUGH for men to quit the habit and start their journey of self-discovery and healthy sexuality.

So, let’s get into the guts of it – on a cellular level. When you ejaculate, you lose nutrients from your body. Most of the nutrients are lost in trace amounts, but zinc, selenium, and copper are significant and cause significant issues. Let's take a look...

Zinc is referred to as an "essential mineral" and the number one supplement for men. This means that the body requires it but is NOT able to produce it on its own. Zinc is important to male sex drive as it helps manufacture testosterone in the body, it prevents a low sperm count, it helps sperm reach the egg, it helps fight infection, and it helps create the proteins needed for strong bones, muscles, tissue, and blood. It is necessary for brain function, and it is also helpful in fighting infection and inflammation of the prostate gland. It helps with hormone production, growth and repair in the body (especially in teens), improves immunity, and helps with digestion.

Each time you ejaculate you lose approximately 5mg of zinc, that’s around half your daily recommended intake. Yes half!! Males require 11-14mg per day, nearly twice as much as females! So, what if you’re ejaculating three times a day? Zinc isn’t produced naturally in the body, and if you're not eating nutrient-rich foods or taking a supplement to replace that zinc, then you're not only starving your body of what it needs, but you're depleting it each time you ejaculate. This then eventuates to a zinc deficiency.

A zinc deficiency can show up as depression, low immunity, prostatism, and impaired cognitive function. Low levels of Zinc can cause copper toxicity (too much copper in the body), which presents symptoms such as fatigue, hormone imbalances, anxiety, mood swings, depression, poor sleep, acne, hair loss, migraine headaches, frequent colds and viruses, easy bruising, and tooth decay. The two minerals balance each other out in the body (they’re called co-factors), but when you have too little zinc, copper often accumulates in various storage organs in your body, which can be toxic.

You also lose copper when you ejaculate. Your body uses copper for making healthy red blood cells, maintaining nerve cells and function, connective tissue production, and maintaining the endocrine, nervous and immune systems. It also helps the body form collagen and absorb iron, and plays a role in energy production and brain development.

“Here is a shortlist of psychiatric symptoms and traits associated with copper overload: hyperactivity, academic underachievement, learning disabilitiesADHDautism, skin sensitivity to tags in shirts or rough fabrics, white spots on fingernails, skin intolerance to cheap metals, emotional meltdowns and frequent anger, ringing in ears, sensitivity to food dyes and shellfish, high anxiety, depression, poor immune function, sleep problems, poor concentration and focus, low dopamine activity, and elevated activity of norepinephrine and adrenaline. Other medical conditions associated with copper overload include acne, allergies, Candida overgrowth, hypothyroidism, anemia, hair loss, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, migraines, and male infertility.”

And when we look at porn addiction specifically, all these symptoms are very common in men that ejaculate regularly. Not just the zinc deficiency, but also the copper toxicity. So what does copper toxicity do to the neurotransmitters (the body’s chemical messengers), and why does that have an impact on a porn addicted brain?

“Copper is important for regulating the synthesis of neurotransmitters that mediate psychiatric symptoms. It is a co-factor in the chemical reaction that converts dopamine (pleasure chemical) to norepinephrine (stress hormone). When copper levels are high, more norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline) are synthesized from dopamine, which can cause feelings of agitation, anxiety and panic, overstimulation, racing thoughts, restlessness, and insomnia. In other words, it has an amphetamine-like effect, revving the nervous system into a state of overdrive.”

Let’s move on to Selenium – also a vital nutrient for men’s health. It protects your prostate and can reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer, especially if your levels are low. Because selenium minimises damage from oxidative stress on cells (i.e diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol levels, and hypertension), tissues in your penis relax and blood flow to your groin improves. It keeps the testes and seminal vesicles healthy, and promotes sperm production and motility. A deficiency in selenium can lead to infertility. Selenium also protects your heart, and it acts as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress from highly reactive free radicals. It helps sustain regular levels of thyroid hormones, and it keeps you from getting sick by powering your immune system.

And don’t forget when you ejaculate, the good hormones and chemicals in your body are DECREASED - Serotonin (happy drug), Oxytocin (love drug), and Dopamine (euphoria drug). These hormones are what I spoke of in earlier chapters and are produced in high levels when you watch porn and ejaculate. But what goes up, must come down. So these chemicals and hormones are decreased, but that then causes Prolactin to increase. An increase in Prolactin can mean poor moods, tiredness, and difficulty getting an erection.

So, porn addiction and chronic masturbation has a bigger impact on your health than you probably realised! Not only does it give you brain damage and erectile dysfunction, it drains your sexual energy, it causes mental health issues, leaves you exhausted and unmotivated, and it depletes you of essential nutrients and minerals. The deeper you dig into porn addiction, the less sexual it becomes!

If you have a porn addiction, you are depleting your body of vital nutrients and energy, and creating an imbalance which needs addressing immediately. In both cases, you are running your body into the ground and expecting your penis, brain, body, organs and hormones to work with no fuel in the tank! You need to look at your diet and nutritional support, as well as the frequency at which you are ejaculating. You can go to a GP and get your copper and zinc levels tested, and a Naturopath can do an oral zinc test as well as send your hair off for a copper analysis.

Omega-3 intake has been seen to increase the intellectual capabilities of teenagers, as well as reduce aggressive behaviour in prison inmates.
